Katy is an appy/arabian cross...she is in her late teens and would make an excellent beginner or childs riding horse. We consider her to be bombproof and traffic safe. She is broke to drive double and single and goes nicely under saddle. We are breeding her to Loki on her next heat cycle for late May foal. We are offering Katy for sale with a LFG for $800

Horses have been my life for as far back as I can remember. My Mom bought me my first horse and footed the bills for me to show hunters throughout college. After graduation, I purchased a horse myself and quickly realized these things are expensive! I needed to find a way to have my horse pay it`s own way.

My introduction to Thoroughbred racing began as an exercise rider. I wasn`t very good at that, so I went on to be a hotwalker and a groom. After about four years we decided to claim a horse with the $2500 we got back from our income taxes. Her name was Miss Bucksville. She actually won three races in a row for me, what an introduction! I owe Missy a debt of gratitude that could never be repaid.

Besides a big box of ribbons, the other thing that I got out of my years of showing is my philosophy of horse care. Nothing is too good for my horses. When a horse enters my operation it is mine regardless of who actually owns it. I promise him that he will be well cared for, will never be asked to run when he is sore, and will get lots of turnout breaks.

I provide the best nutrition available and use a variety of supplements. I use veterinarians who specialize in both the traditional and alternative fields of medicine. With this combination there is no need to inject their joints or pump them up with steroids. Your horse can get the star treatment too. Feel free to contact us for more information on becoming part of a winning team. Your horses will thank you for it.

I have been fortunate to own a few horses over the years that were what I considered to be worthy breeding material. To qualify as such, the horse must possess several qualities that are likely to make it`s offspring contributors to the betterment of the breed. To name a few, the horse must have a good pedigree, with lots of black type up close. They must have good conformation with no abnormalities. I like to see a good performance record as well. An example of this is my mare Honour, her mother produced six foals, all of whom were multiple winners. Honour herself won 13 races by the time she was five years old. To date Honour`s first foal to race has earned over $94,000 and is still going strong. There are enough unwanted horses out there that need homes right now, we don`t need to be creating any more of them.

UPDATE: Honour`s first foal just went over $104,000 in career earnings. Unfortunately Honour herself passed away unexpectedly on Good Friday of 2003, four days before her due date. She is sorely missed.

It is my opinion that the way a trainer secures his horse`s retirement from racing is as important as his win percentage. When looking for a potential trainer, that is a good question to ask as it will give you insight into their overall philosophy about animals and responsibility toward them. All racehorses retire eventually, some of them before they even get started. Therefore, it is a reality that cannot be ignored within a racing stable. I have a very small operation averaging about five horses in training at any one time. Even with those small numbers I have still owned close to 50 horses over the years. I could never win enough races to feed 50 retirees.

I have found the answer to my problems to be horse rescues. There is such a huge amount of horses out there that need rescued that it can take a while to place a horse. I use several rescues so that when the time comes, I have more opportunities to get the horse placed quickly. I use Lost and Found in York, Pa. as well as the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation. Recently, I have been using HorseNet Horse Rescue in Eldersburg, MD. These organizations have given me such peace of mind. The horses can never be bred, raced, or sold. When I donate a horse, they have a home for life.

Because the Rescues have been such a Godsend to me, I try to repay the favor as much as I can. I help with the ever necessary fundraising, man the open houses and the horse expos occasionally. I serve as an on track coordinator. When a trainer has a horse that he wants to donate I help expedite the process. It seems like I am always trying to get someone`s horse in a rescue somewhere, but it is worth it to save a horse`s life.

There is legislation in the works that will make the slaughter of horses illegal in the US. At the moment it is illegal in California only, but hopefully the rest of the country will follow suit. Until then I will keep up my efforts to place as many horses as I can. There were 54,000 horses slaughtered for human consumption in 2002 in the US alone. A large number of those were racehorses. Here is Timely Boy, a Michael Gill claim who fractured his knee in six places in a race. The owner didn`t want him, so he gave him to another trainer who threw him in a field to starve. Two months later he was sent to the auction where luckily he was spotted and purchased for $90 by a rescue volunteer. As you can see he was underweight, covered in sores and still unable to bear weight. He was humanely euthanized the following day, but spent his last hours on earth medicated and bandaged and with a full stomach. At least we were able to provide that final comfort. It doesn`t have to end this way. All it takes is a little effort to make sure your horse has a secure future.

I invite your inquires into humane horse retirement. I also invite you to visit the links to these rescues. I hope you can support them as I do. I always say, "If you aren`t part of the solution, you are part of the problem."

A view from the killer pen with a close up of what happens when horses are thrown in with other horses that they don`t know.
